Big pants get sexy at Marks & Spencer

Bridget Jones gave big knickers a bad name when she wore them for support in BJ’s Diary and most shapewear such as Spanx and Magic Pants concentrate on function rather than appearance. Support knickers, until now, have not been something you want to be caught in and let’s face it, getting Spanx on and off can be terrifyingly hard work, especially mixed with age-ache muscles.

However, now it is possible to remain reinforced and sexy, with M&S’s new lingerie collection, which launches in August and has a welcome touch of burlesque glamour (which might have improved Ms Jones’s chances).

At the autumn press show last week we met Julia Mercer, the technical manager for knickers. She showed us the new Autograph shape wear collection, which has been given a sexy, feminine make over by using gorgeous lace and embroidery. She told us “We’ve been doing incredibly well on our shapewear collection so we’ve invested in prettier, more decorative fabrications and sexier shapes, such as the long line bras and waist cinchers.”

Julia told us that basically, shape wear is all about power fabrics, which until now have been pretty dull (and don’t we know…). But the Autograph collection has introduced some lovely new ones, black satin embroidered with lavender flowers, fine black stretch organza over gold satin and fuchsia pink stretch lace. The long line knickers smooth a controlled curve over hips, tummy right up to under the bust. The long line bras (our favourite) have a retro 60s feel and give you a great shape. The lace shorts have a clever trim that stops VPL and the bodies have all been reworked to look great as well as perform better.

M&S shaperwear currently comes in functional black and white, but check back in August for the new, altogether more racy collection.
