Breast Cancer Awareness month: heads-up for October

Avon’s cupcake set, available online or from your Avon rep from October 1st

This is a post to put you on alert for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October….yes I know that’s a couple of weeks away, but you’ll be surprised how quick it will go and for those of you who might want to get involved, there’s still time.

We recently visited the Breakthrough Breast Cancer press day to see what brands are up to and this year there’s a Go Pink website to give you ideas on how to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer during October, with useful tips on what ideas work well, how to start organising and fund raising projects that work best for home, school or work. We quite fancy a pink bake-off using the Avon baking kit (£5, with £1.25 going to BBA, Avon have a remarkable track record on raising funds for breast cancer) or the Marks & Spencer pink (obvs) cup cake baking heart (£7.50, with 75p going to BCA). The Avon pack has  a rosebud fairy cake recipe from Fiona Cairns, supplier of the Wills & Kate wedding cake.

What BBC has done rather well this year is to tie up with retailers such as Green & Black’s, Sainsbury’s, Laura Ashley, Marks & Spencer, Avon, Adidas and Monica Vidar to produce products you really want to buy, regardless of the fact that each retailer makes a good donation to the cause (usually 10% of the recommended retail price). We are already itching to purchase the Sainsbury’s Cook Collection cast iron casserole dishes in the best shade of pink (there’s also a heart shaped one too, perfect for engagement/wedding presents). Products go on sale in October and we will be putting our favourites in our Things We Love section as soon as they are available on line. Meanwhile, some nice pictures to whet your appetite and maybe inspire you into action!

I think that by wearing pink, it reminds women about how important it is to get a mammogram. Prevention and early detection is the best way of fighting breast cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness month is on its way and it is great to bring awareness to it regardless of the way it is brought to people’s attention. Whether from participating in a walk, updating your facebook status, or by wearing a breast cancer ribbon , any effort made to help bring awareness and help find a cure for this disease is a help in many ways.
