The Printed Square by Nicky Albrechtsen

A  gorgeous little book came through the post this week from Thames & Hudson, The Printed Square by Nicky Albrechtsen, all about handkerchiefs. You might remember we wrote about Nicky and Fola Solanke’s book Scarves last year, this one is in a similar style, documenting the history, characteristics and even where and how to buy vintage handkerchiefs.

But mostly its a book of beautiful and colourful images of some of the best designs you’re likely to see on a printed vintage hanky, basically it’s Pinterest on paper, lots of beautiful pictures and not too many words. My first thoughts on flicking trough the book were ‘Ooh let’s get this on TWR’s new Pinterest page!” ( yep, we have one just for TWR now, we even have a special button in the right hand column) because that’s where my head is at currently. It’s tragic but true.

There’s a further interview with Nicky on the Thames & Husdon blog here where she explains that her haul of hankies inspired high street fashion brand Oasis for its summer 2012 collection, there will also be an exhibition of the hankies in the book at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London from March 22nd, more details here.

For all of you still reading books or looking at pictures in books, this one is a visual treat. If you are a scarf or print designer, order it immediately. From here.

A few pictures for you to pin….

Aren’t they gorgeous?

I’ve a collection of about twenty of these handkerchiefs, inherited from my mother and dating, I’d say, from the ’30s, and have been thinking they really deserve to be displayed. Look forward to seeing the book – and must investigate Pinterest. Just when you think you’ve mastered new technology, they bring along something else – ho hum!

Oh Rosie once on you will be lost forever, kiss goodbye to everyone you love because it will take over your world. ALTHO you might all want to check the terms and conditions…currently causing something of a stir. Hopefully it will sort itself out. A
