A walk with The Women’s Room and Instagram

Walking is something we love to do here at TWR, you could call it our preferred way to get about London, as it allows you to see so much more of everything, so when Bupa asked us to get involved with its current initiative to get everyone walking more, it was easy to say yes. AND it involved using Instagram, our preferred social media currently (until another one is invented). All we had to do was walk our favourite London short walk with photographer Jiri Siftar.

So this is my favourite walk, along the Thames from Hammersmith Bridge to Chiswick Mall, as Instagrammed by Jiri. We did it last week when the sun was shining and  all was well with the world. You start just below the bridge (above) on the north west side usefully close to some pubs. The google map of it is here

Walking west you pass a lot of river activity, including these lovely boat houses bobbing up and down with the tide.

I asked Jiri which Instagram filters (my current obsession) he favoured and he pointed me at the newer, softer additions to the range, including Valencia and Sierra and to avoid the harsher ones like Lo-Fi. Jiri’s Instagram user name is @jeera, he has over 90,000 followers and mentioned he considers a photo unsuccessful if it gets less than 30 hits A MINUTE (60 hits a minute is acceptable) I didn’t dare tell him we get excited when one of ours gets into double figure ‘likes’ and that’s after it’s been on all day…

The route takes you passed The Dove pub, which has the smallest bar in London, below (luckily there’s a much bigger one behind it) and in front of some gorgeous examples of Georgian architecture.

And then passed a few more boats.

On the way you go passed Kelmscott House, where William Morris used to live and the William Morris Society has a base. Then passed Emery Walker, Morris’s typographer’s house (we wrote about him here). You end up at St Nicholas church where William Hogarth is buried, which has an excellent cemetery ( we love a spooky cemetery). The whole walk takes about half an hour.

If you want to find out more about the Bupa walking initiative, which aims to get people to keep-healthier-by-walking-more way,  check it out here. Bupa has sponsored this post.

Oh and we have this Lomo camera to give away too! I know, we’re all ‘give, give, give’ here at TWR…the Lomo is quite cool because you can take Instagram type pictures with it. If you know the answer to this question, leave it in the comments box below, we’ll put all the winners in a hat ON SUNDAY 16th SEPT and let you know who got the prize.

Here’s the question ‘On average, how many calories can a typical person burn in half an hour, simply by walking?’

There’s even a clue to be found on this page

Having a dog is a sure way to make absolutely sure you are out of the door every morning to have my daily walk #noexcuses!! Around 150 calories for every half an hour of walking – makes walking round the Common in wind, rain, frost, snow etc seem more worthwhile!!

Love using Instagram, it is one of my favourite iphone apps along with snapseed which is a smaller version of photoshop. Perfect for capturing the forever changing London scenery.

Due to living in Munich with the next London trip planned for Jan 2013, I don´t think I´ll be able to do this walk any time soon. However just wanted to let you know that I love your blog, which I only discovered last week, however as most of my clients are still on holidays I´ve been going through lots of old posts and had to laugh out loud reading some of the middle aged mum home truths!
Along with Scott and Garance you´re now on my list and I´ll be tuning in to you two every day for a fun and realistic life/fashion/culture fix.

Will be taking that walk this weekend! Loving the pics – really nostalgic. A half-hour of walking helps you burn 150 calories.

  • Malin says:

150 calories, not bad. almost one hot cross bun.

  • Amanda says:

Still plenty of time for anyone else to enter this competition! We wont be putting all the names into a hat until Sunday so add your guess if you think you know the answer….Ax

  • Janine says:

How exciting! I am currently waddling rather than walking as I’m 8 months pregnant, but walking is definitely the best method of transport there is. Answer – 150 calories (but 30 minutes of walking for me at the moment would probably be double that!).

  • Heather Hill says:

150 calories. Lovely to look at the scenery around from a different perspective- something I should do more often

  • Ali Hughes says:

The answer is 150 calories. I still miss living in London – and I left nearly 30 years ago! Walking is brilliant (and cheap).

  • Ooooh, I would just love one of these to play with. 150 calories (a large glass of vin rouge).

  • Amanda says:

And the winner is……..Sarah! Sending you an email to confirm where we send the camera to, well done! A
