This is a sweet, sad and thoughtful novel to fill a bleak January or February. Set in New York, it weaves a list of characters around a mildly mild plot to sell a pair of the Ruby Slippers made famous by Judy Garland on The Wizard of Oz. There are some lovely set-ups; a well observed marriage that’s been rattling along for years until something major happens, a gay dad with an estranged and miserable teenage daughter, a misplaced teen and an eccentric old woman with a story to tell.
