Style Icon: Claire Underwood

house-of-cardsThe most ruthless couple in American (fictional) politics, Frank and Claire Underwood are back tonight in Season 3 of the outstanding House of Cards. If you haven’t watched it yet – I’m jealous – get Netflix now and binge watch it until you are up to date and can join in the inevitable dinner party conversations over the next few weeks.

Robin Wright as the cold and calculating political wife from hell is both fascinating and chilling. Rarely showing any emotion she steers her husbands career with a calm ruthlessness which verges on evil. Her clothes reflect her personality, stick thin (she runs a lot) she is fond of tasteful body con dresses in neutral colours, power dressing tailored suits, crisp white (occasionally blue) shirts and trench coats. She almost never wears accessories – apart from a single string of pearls – and carries large understated, statement bags.

Screen-shot-2013-02-10-at-10.59.06-PM-1024x640Women’s Wear Daily interviewed Kemal Harris, Robin Wright’s personal stylist who created Claire’s looks for the new season and she said she has taken inspiration from Lauren Bacall and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for her new look. “You can see Claire is more like a contemporary Princess Diana and less like Jackie Kennedy,”

Claire will also be moving away from her favourite labels Max Mara and Armani and wearing more contemporary designers such as Altuzarra, Derek Lam, and Proenza Schouler  – and, shock horror, she may even be seen wearing some colour!

Check season 3 (or 1 and 2 if you are a late adopter) on Netflix, starting tonight.
