Still Life with Breadcrumbs will have you immersed from the first page and leave you wishing for a sequel at the last.
It centres around the life of Rebecca Winter, a 60 year old photographer forced to up sticks to small-town America and sublet her New York apartment in an attempt to make ends meet. While this could have easily turned into another girl-meets-boy (or woman-meets-man) story, Anna Quindlen’s deft characterisation and well-woven narrative prevents it from slipping into clichés.
Her humorous, and at times feminist, take on familiar issues from ageing parents to failed relationships, is brilliantly observed and it makes this book stand out from any other in its class.
