Shopping with experts: Party dressing at Topshop

Top Shop

How fabulous is Topshop Oxford Circus at the moment? Jane went in last week and twittered about how she was buying age-inappropriate clothing from Topshop and loving it, so today I popped in to check out what she saw. There are sequins and party dresses everywhere, and I so wish I was still able to wear the fuchsia pink sequin big knickers…in my head I can obviously, but in the real world I’ll leave it to the 17 year olds.

There’s lots of stuff to leave to the 17 year olds, but if you cherry pick, there are some real gems. I was very taken with the all-over matt sequin grey jacket, the lace full skirted coat, the multitude of sequined shirts and tops and even the gold sequined harem trousers that Jane said she’d toyed with but resisted, (a difficult look to pull off, although if anyone can do it she can).

I LOVE a bit of silk velvet and fell for this hombre blue sleeveless dress from the Boutique range at £60. It has an asymetric hem that is slightly higher at the front to make it a tiny bit sexier but not too scary. Because it’s in drapey velvet the generous shape hangs nicely from the pretty gathers on the shoulders. And it has pockets, essential for any dress, which are lined in the lighter coloured velvet so reveal a flash of pale blue when you use them. I’m wearing it with cobalt blue tights and my black DKNY Cozi you might remember me talking about way back.
