Vintage Red Cross

The team at the British Red cross sent us a nice invite to the opening of their first ever Vintage Shop, which opened yesterday in Shrewsbury. Sadly we couldn’t go but they sent us pictures and now we wish we had….what lovely vintage treasures they have there! The boots (above) look fabulous, as does the handbag (below), doubtless they have gone by now, but the store has lots of stock so I’m sure there are many other gems to rummage through.

Opening a vintage-only store is a great idea and if this one goes well, The Red Cross will open more (I have already demanded one in Barnes). I always feel just that little bit less guilty buying stuff in charity shop and I think I’m single handedly keeping the Octavia Foundation store in Barnes open, the amount I buy from it. The idea of a vintage only shop makes me come over all giddy with excitement.

For those lucky enough to live in beautiful Shrewsbury, the store is on Mardol Street. Check out the Red Cross website for more details

  • What a fabulous idea to keep to vintage. The editing is definitely worth paying more for.

Hmm a vintage shop in Mardol, well I suppose I could be persuaded by that bag – it’s for charity after all… (grabs keys and runs out the door!)

  • Helen says:

Sorry, but I’m a bit sceptical about charity shops going down the Mary Portas route. I am a serious “chazza” addict and whilst I definitely don’t like the ones that smell of wee (of which there are many), I am even less of a fan of the ones that think they can get away with charging £50 for a “vintage” handbag. My favourites are the smaller ones which are less corporate and where you know that all the best stuff hasn’t already been picked over and either a) over-priced or b) flogged off on ebay. The whole point of charity shops for me is that it’s all about the thrill of the chase.

    PS
The other day I found a fabulous Chloe 1980s style blouse for £4… that’s what it’s all about for me.

Amanda if you go, let us know what you buy! A

maybe i am slightly biased… but this is a fantastical shop!! beautifully done and what fab stock!! would not look out of place in knightsbridge!

  • Twenty years ago charity shops were full of fabulous 70s crockery and fabrics and enough paisley kaftans and fur coats for a lifetime of Grey Gardens outfits. Today the London ones at least just have Primark clothes and shelves of chic-lit. I love the idea of a genuinely vintage charity shop

Amanda – as I happened to be passing(!) I popped into the Red Cross shop and low and behold there was the vintage bag! I also bought a skirt (because I’m told knee length pleats are destined to be big next season) and a belt and necklace just seemed too good to pass up… Would post a picture but that is way beyond my technical ability!

  • Amanda says:

Yeay Amanda! Good girl! As you were passing eh?…..Knee length pleats, spot on. Ax

  • Rachel says:

I love vintage and as long as the pricing is right, I’d be all over it in a heartbeat.

  • I could be tempted to buy the photos, I love those boots! – and the vintage, of course. GG

  • Helen says:

Hi Hannah…. the prices sound very reasonable and you have done a fab job of fitting out and styling the shop. It looks great. I’ll definitely pop in if I am up your way.

  • Hannah Simpson says:

More and more new faces coming in the shop! No quibbles over prices as they love the stock and it is fairly evenly priced, and they know with that purchase they love, they are doing some good for a charity too..we have vintage hats for £5.00, vintage bags too..vintage 50’s blouse for £6.95.. so Helen you must come in we could please your bargain taste buds too !

    Hi Amanda,

Thanks so much for mentioning our Barnes shop – have you been to any of our other shops? We’re working on building an eBay shop at the moment so that charity shop fans and wide can get involved!

The British Red Cross shop looks amazing – very taken with the mirrored boxes at the front!
