Vintage love: Skinny Rich Fairies

We met Julia Craig at the Hammersmith Vintage Fair recently and were pretty wowed by her customised vintage clothing for her new range Skinny Rich Fairies, a collection Stevie Nicks might get excited about.

Julia is a regular stall holder at Portobello Road and has been working in vintage for decades selling to loyal followers including celebrities and designers (Stevie could well be a customer, I forgot to ask) but has branched out with SRF to create more modern styles out of vintage fabrics. She constructs new designs from beautiful old fabric lengths and deconstructs vintage styles to remake them into wearable new ones. Her years at the top-quality end of the business means she has collected around her an experienced team of seamstresses who can handle the delicate fabrics, including one who used to make clothes for Princess Margaret. Designs are beautiful but easy, as Julia says most of her customers want to wear their purchases with jeans or for every-day rather than as posh-frocks.

I loved the styles and thought the prices were very reasonable as the quality is superb- I love the statement white shirts. Julia has a selection of her styles on the Skinny Rich Fairies website, including styles that have already sold so you can get an idea of her work.

Above, shirts and jacket from the Skinny Rich Fairies collection of modern designs from vintage fabrics, with prices from around £280, the gold embroidered silk jacket is £285 and still available here.

Julia has a selection of classic vintage items too, including below, this lovely gold metallic 80s tunic dress at £145 (below right) and amazing lame coat (below left) sadly already sold, but she updates with new stock regularly, so keep tuned in.
