Life & Style Icon: Lyn Slater

Having see Lyn Slater in the latest Mango advert, I was fascinated to know more about her. A professor of social studies at Fordham University in New York, she also writes the Accidental Icon blog and describes her style as, ‘for the real woman who operates in a professional world who has to have credibility but at the same time doesn’t want to look boring’.

She is signed to Elite Models and has appeared in a Valentino campaign and a one of Barney’s ‘personalities’, as well as appearing in Mango’s ‘story of uniqueness’.

FOR ME, A WOMAN WHO IS ABSORBED IN HER WORK, WHO DOES NOT CARE ABOUT GAINING ONE’S FAVOR, STRONG YET SUBTLE AT THE SAME TIME, IS ESSENTIALLY MORE SEDUCTIVE. THE MORE SHE HIDES AND ABANDONS HER FEMININITY, THE MORE IT EMERGES FROM THE VERY HEART OF HER EXISTENCE. A PAIR OF BRILLIANTLY CUT COTTON TROUSERS CAN BE MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN A GORGEOUS SILK GOWN.”

—YOHJI YAMAMOTO—

I love the above quote by Yohji Yamamoto posted on Lyn’s blog – which perfectly sums up how I feel about life and style.

Always encouraging to see older models getting a higher profile. I’ve followed the Accidental Icon blog for a while. Interesting clothes and thought provoking ideas. You would need a very healthy bank balance to buy most of the garments she suggests but an individualistic source of inspiration I think. As a fellow academic I’m often sidetracked by wondering what she’s like in the classroom. I’ve never heard her speak so have no idea of her vocal style.
